The wearing of the green, 1930s style

To wish one and all a happy St. Patrick’s Day, we thought we’d share this 1936 newsreel, which features coverage of that year’s parade along New York’s Fifth Avenue. It appears to have been a more sedate affair in those days, which makes us yearn all the more for a time machine so that we could experience this event as it once was. The contemporary version, a sordid pageant of bad hats and overindulgence, leaves us a bit cold, we must admit.

And be sure to click the Listen Now link on the upper left today — we’ve added some familiar Irish tunes, recorded by the likes of Bing Crosby, Glenn Miller, and Count O’Basie, for today only.
